Ejection Key Why do MLB players/coaches argue with umpires when ejection seems to be the only outcome?
I'm for doing this when faced with a big loss as it kind of adds reassurement to the fan base, and I've been told that ocassionally -key word- calls get overturned. But does arguing really send a message to the guys officiating the game?
For managers it's to show the team he's got their back. Also as someone else said it can serve to pump up the team when they're playing badly. See Lou Pinella of the Cubs a couple of months ago. They were headed nowhere fast (June 1 they were in 4th place 7 1/2 games back). Then Lou threw an absolute temper tantrum one afternoon and now they are 1 1/2 games back and have been in first place over the Brewers a few days recently.
